The Unspoken Truth of Internet Marketing - By Patric Chan

About the author:

Patric Chan is a best-selling author, international speaker and world-class internet marketer who has trained thousands of students worldwide through his courses, live events, and training. In the internet marketing community, his product has been listed as #1 for Affiliate Marketing in ClickBank and commonly appear as a super affiliate in product launches.

What’s the Truth about Internet Marketing?

You have a goal, a dream.

You wanted to start making money online with internet marketing.

You’ve heard about how amazing it is, and yes, IT IS that amazing. I’ve been doing this for 15 years now and I can honestly tell you that I’ve been so blessed to make a small fortune from this business.

There are many ways to make money online.

If you’re a newbie, the easiest would be affiliate marketing, where you’ll get a cut of commission by promoting someone else’s or a company’s product.

Now, this is not an affiliate marketing eBook, but it’s about how internet marketing is failing (But don’t worry, it’s not all gloomy, there’s always an opportunity in times of trouble).
But in order for me to lead to that part, let me cover some things about affiliate marketing…

You can go to the websites below to find products to promote as an affiliate to earn commissions:

  • Amazon Associate Program – This allows you to promote Amazon.com’s products
  • ClickBank – Probably the biggest affiliate network for info-products
  • Commission Junction and LinkShare - Affiliate networks used by big companies
  • Independent Affiliate Programs – There are many other websites that manage their own affiliate programs internally where you can join too.

I usually choose ClickBank and if you’re somewhat new, it’s more convenient to just start with ClickBank.

So the technical steps to make money from an affiliate program are simply these:

  1. Step #1: Market research to uncover the demand for a particular product.
  2. Step #2: Find an affiliate program that is suitable to promote.
  3. Step #3: Further research on the affiliate program to make sure it can convert well to make money for you.
  4. Step #4: Build a website and put content that’s related to the market or the product you’re promoting.
  5. Step #5: Promote your website. This is where you’ll need to learn how to get traffic (free or paid traffic).

Now, assuming you’ve completed all of the 5 steps above, there’s still the possibility that you don’t make any sale because there are so many reasons why someone may not want to buy!

So whatever the effort, time and money you’ve put in, it will all go down the drain…

So some internet marketers started to become smarter when approaching the affiliate marketing business model.

They no longer try to convert the traffic on their website to sales, but into subscribers.

In our internet marketing world, we call these subscribers as a “list”.

Because if they don’t buy, at least you can still capture them as “prospects”, where you can follow up with them later on.

Marketers started building lists.

In order for them to do that, they’ll need:

  1. To set up an opt-in page
  2. To come up with some kind of enticement to get them wanting to subscribe into the list
  3. Learn about autoresponders like Aweber, GetResponse, MailChimp, Ontraport, etc.

But it doesn’t end there.

The marketer must then learn the skills and knowledge of email marketing because the sales are only made when you’re able to send out “convincing” emails to your list to buy.

Then you’ll also need to learn about managing your list and that’s another whole story, to begin with.

This is the IDEAL method for internet marketing but let’s face it…

How many newbies can actually do this?

I mean, if you’ve invested in some kind of “business in a box” program or system, I have no doubt this is doable. For instance, something like the CB Passive Income License Program.

If not… if you’re going to do this from scratch, what is the likelihood you’ll even reach second base?

You see, if you’re an experienced marketer, everything’s good.

But if you’re a newbie, doing internet marketing is actually not that easy.

It requires A LOT of hard work.

Truth be told…

Internet Marketing is failing.

Okay, perhaps, you may be able to “get started” or “setup”. But the competition for promotion is fierce.

Let’s say you’re competing with other affiliates for an upcoming affiliate program launch.

Just do a Google search and you’ll see there are hundreds of competitors, easily. From YouTube videos to websites.

Whatever you’re doing, other affiliates are doing the same too. After all, most of them are trained in the same way.

In other words, assuming that you’re able to overcome the “getting started” phase, the promotion is another big phase you need to overcome.

And when you get the traffic, it still doesn’t mean people will buy.

So you may be thinking…

“It’ll be far better for me to promote my own product.” Wrong. It’s actually a very bad decision unless you’re a pro.

Here’s why…

If you’re already struggling to make sales for a great product that has been made to sell, how do you think you’ll do better with your own product?

Because if you were to believe this, it means you’re suggesting that your product and the entire marketing system (the webpage, sales copy, email follow-ups, etc) are more supreme that the affiliate program’s product.

And besides, if you’ve just created a product and you’re expecting affiliates and JV partners beating you to the doorstep to promote your product, unfortunately, you’ll be very disappointed.

Every day there’s a product launch by an internet marketer. Furthermore, you’re trying to compete with the Gurus who have been established for many years.

“So how did others do it?” One word – sacrifices.

They are able to withstand all of the challenges, including having enough funds to see them through. On average, that person should be able to withstand for at least 6 months with ongoing internet marketing training.

Now, of course, that’s not bad at all, seeing that 6 months is a relatively very short period of time for the reward you’re going to get…

It goes beyond this manuscript to teach you about mindset and attitude. But if you don’t want to fail, be prepared to strengthen your mindset and have the right attitude towards success.

There are plenty of books to read or seminars to attend on this topic, DO THAT for your own benefit.

You need every single ounce of positivity to see you through because the slightest negative thought will be enough to convince you to drop out.

Seriously. YOU NEED THAT.

“Is A Sale Enough?”

Making a sale is great. Earning some money every month is marvelous. Who wouldn’t love that!

But if you have a family to take care, bills to pay… you better come up with a better plan. A single product won’t make you rich or even give you a stable income.

Frankly, I don’t have this problem. And you probably won’t have it as well if you have a sales funnel in place for your internet marketing business.

But if you’re peddling to just selling a single product with no backend or upsells, it’s going to be really tough.

Here’s how your sales funnel should look like, at a bare minimum:

1. Entry Offers

You can call these front-end products if you wish. Basically, these are low-cost products like books or short courses. They should be sold for about $10 - $30. They’re good products where your customers will enjoy consuming the content of it.

2. Core Offers

These should be sold from $30 - $100. They are comprehensive programs, from A to Z on a specific topic. So let’s say someone buys a book (an Entry Offer) called, “20 Ways to Make Money from Blogging”, your Core Offer could be a complete course on how to launch a blog and promote it.

3. Follow Up Offers

Follow Up Offers are basically programs that are very specialized in their topics. For instance, a copywriting course that can be offered to someone who buys a course about blogging (because they can improve the skill of writing on their blog). This copywriting course can also be sold to someone who just buys an Entry Offer about anything else that can be related to copywriting.

So if you have multiple product offers, you’re in good hands. Because not only can your customer buy more products from you, you have “multiple streams of income” from the sales funnels that are automated. But how many marketers actually have this figured out and implemented in their business?

“It Sounds so Gloomy…”

Not really.

Internet marketing is probably the best way to start creating a new stream of income. And it’s likely the ideal option to start a business by using the internet.

It’s low cost and it has a lot of leverages. So it’s still the finest choice you’ve made to start internet marketing.

But you need to know that the world of internet marketing is not as wonderful as how it has been painted for you to see.

Be prepared to invest your time and resources.

It requires TIME to nurture it. Because it’s the internet, it doesn’t mean you can start something from nothing and expect to make money in 48 hours.

The trick is if you can hire a coach (if you can afford it) or get a “business in a box” package to buy, grab it.

That will accelerate your speed a lot.

Saving on the minor money will give you deeper cuts into your finances. They call it, ‘penny wise, and pound foolish’.

But you don’t need to hire me or buy my system. It could be anyones.

I’m only encouraging you to do that, especially if you are a newbie because I don’t want you to be part of another “internet marketing failure”.

There are already many casualties in this business, you don’t need to add onto the numbers, but instead, you need to inspire others than YOU CAN DO IT.

A Shortcut

As you know, there’s no one magic pill to this business.

There is a lot of hard work and testing (but well worth it). But this can be shortened drastically if you have some sort of a system t use, especially one that has been proven.

You need to start having a system to capture leads from the internet and follow up with them.

Then have an incentive for them to help to build your list. The most convenient incentive is probably money. Devise a way how they can get paid for building your list.

Next, you should promote affiliate programs or someone else’s products because that’s the EASIEST WAY to make money online.

Of course there are other parts of internet marketing you need to sort out in order for you to have a system.

But if you want a true shortcut, you can just clone my internet marketing business with the CB Passive Income License Program.

Then later on, you can model my business and the funnel to build your own system.

Turn Your Passion Into Online Business

7 Steps To Turn Your Passion Into Online Business:

Step 1: Discovering Your Passion

When thinking about discovering your passion, here are a few questions you might ask
yourself…
What are some of my hobbies?
What unique skills do I have?
When people ask me for help, what do they usually turn to me for?
A simple trick to discovering what you’re passionate about is…
    THE PARTY TEST
Imagine you are at a party and you don’t know anyone. Someone comes up to you. What could you talk about with them for hours on end? Is it your kids? Gardening? Guitar playing? Cooking?
The point of discovering your passion and using it in building your online business is so that you are excited and motivated by what you do every day—even when the going gets tough.
Remember, you don’t need to be an expert on a topic to provide value. This is a common misconception and deterrent for getting started. Of course, you have value and chances
are that you probably don’t realize just how much you know compared to the next person who could really use your help!
If you’re still stumped and can’t think of anything. Consider this:
What life experience do you have that you could help others attain or overcome?
When starting an online business, you want to think about your passion and its
potential in the market. This brings us to your next step, market fit.

Step 2: Determining Market Fit and Potential

When you’ve narrowed in on your passion and skill set, the next stepping stone is determining market fit.
The market fit is simply described as the group of people that fit your product.
Think about…
Who would benefit from your knowledge?
Is the market size big enough for you to profit from it?
Where can you most likely find this type of person?
Let’s take an example.
Say you’re unique skill is you’ve mastered vegan cooking.
There are several people who can benefit from your expertise. To name a few, people
who are lactose intolerant or people who avoid eating meat for health or religious
reasons. This is likely a very large market, with a lot of potentials to profit.
The best and easiest way to find out for sure is using the Google Keyword Planner.
Reach the right customers with the right keywords. Get keyword ideas to help build your campaigns with the Adword Keyword Planner.
You can go here to get to Google’s Keyword Planner:
https://adwords.google.com/home/tools/keyword-planner/
Use the Google Keyword Planner by simply searching a keyword or phrase. Lastly, assess the number of searches which indicate your market size.
Now that we know how to determine our market fit and potential we can start to get into the head of these potential customers and better understand their needs. This brings us to our next step, creating an avatar.

Step 3: Creating An Avatar

An avatar is a single person that embodies the representation of your ideal customer.
Any good business starts with catering to their customer, that’s why this step is vital to creating a successful product and marketing strategy.
You must understand your customer’s needs and fears so you get down to how you can better help him/her.
What age is your ideal customer?
Are they male or female?
What are their biggest problems as they relate to your solution?
Where would you be able to find your ideal customer (sites, communities, etc.)?
If you do a good job of defining your avatar then they will become as real to you as a real
customer. You should be able to narrow in on the type of language they will be most responsive to, be able to know what keeps them up at night, what would motivate them.
In turn, you’ll be able to structure your product with the right pain points and solutions that will be delivered in a way that will resonate with your potential customer.
Now that you better understand how to narrow in on your ideal demographic, let’s talk about building a list of prospects in our next step on building a following.

Step 4: Building a Following

A following is a group of people who are interested in your content and who will want to stay updated on the information you will share with them.
You want to cultivate a strong relationship with these people because they will look to you as an authority figure and will, in turn, seek and take your advice.
This means that later down the road when you want to make a recommendation to them about a product you will be offering, they will trust you.
Your following is your future potential buyers.
There are numerous outlets where you can build a following. You will recognize them by the names of major social media platforms YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, but also including various online forums and sites. You can even start to build a following offline through your communities, interest groups, etc.
The best place to start is where you think most of your prospective buyers will be. This may be in a particular Facebook group, maybe it’s Instagram because you have a young demographic, or it may even be so specific as in your local communities, like a self-help book club, etc.
You can really think outside the box here.
So what do you start with? Start by cultivating a relationship with those people. Maybe you start that Facebook group or Instagram page and start inviting or following people who would be interested in your content. Maybe you start publishing cooking videos on YouTube. Maybe you start commenting on a forum and building authority among its users.
The point here is to find where your prospective buyers are and start an outlet of
communication with them so you can build rapport. Give them value and they’ll want
consistent communication from you where you’ll eventually be able to sell targeted offers to them. Before we do that though we need to first build a list of prospective buyers.

Step 5: Building a List of Prospective Buyers

Now that you understand the importance of building your community of prospective buyers, you probably realize that you’ll need a way to organize them to be able to deliver offers in the future.
The way by which you turn a prospective buyer into a lead and in turn into a customer is through the use of what we call in digital marketing, a funnel.
In this specific case, you will want to set up an opt-in funnel.
An opt-in funnel is a series of pages you set up, the goal of which is to obtain the email address of your potential buyer. You want to collect a list of emails so you can communicate and build a relationship with those leads—and email is definitely, the best way to do that!
The most important part of all of this is the opt-in form that asks them for their name and email so that you can send them regular newsletters and updates. You can set up easy opt-in forms using Leadpages.net.
Now, not everyone will go around handing you their email just because you ask them.
That’s where you have to deliver valuable content—this is your knowledge on whatever passion, skill or interest you honed in on in Step 1. This includes tips, advice, blueprints,
or any other related know-how that they’d be interested in in a simple PDF format—yep, it’s that easy.
The delivery method? Email, of course! You can use any email provider to help you get those emails out, such as MailChimp.com—it’s easy for beginners and free to use too! You’ll just need to make sure you link your opt-in form on Leadpages with your email provider of choice. You can learn how to do that through Leadpages’ site. Now let’s talk
about how you’ll make money with your list next.

Step 6: Monetizing Your Audience

Now that you know how to start a following and a way to reach that following with just a click of a button you might be thinking, “How do I get to the money part?”
A rookie mistake is to start monetizing too early. Another rookie mistake? Taking too long to monetize.
So let’s start with a baseline.
You want to send your list free content emails before you start sending them promotional ones. These can be short articles you send them, pdf reports you link off to, or even videos that you find on YouTube that you think will be helpful to your subscribers.
It doesn’t have to be content you create, but it does need to be content that they find valuable. You’ll want to send at least two free content pieces before asking for anything in return.
Start with value and reciprocity will follow.
With ClickBank, you can earn a commission of 75% on products you promote from the ClickBank Marketplace.
main-qimg-e8ea31ba7e76882e155a389aac425b6b
The key to navigating the ClickBank Marketplace is to start with the category your subscribers are most likely to be interested in.
From there you’re most likely going to find the best converting products at the top of the list.
These are the products that are selling the most for affiliates and are most likely going to pump out the most bang for your promotional buck.
A couple of tips:
ClickBank affiliates usually look for products with a gravity of 10 or higher. This means that at least 10 different affiliates are promoting the product and making sales regularly for it.
Other things to look out for are if the product offers re-billing commission which means the product owner has a product that bills the customer each month, and they’re willing to give you a percent of what’s earned— a month after month.
With these tips, you’ll be promoting the top products which are most likely to convert your subscribers into commissions and even make you some recurring income along the way!
After you get up and going, you’ll want to think about how to scale your efforts. That’s in next step.

Step 7: Scaling Your Profits

Now you’re dialed in with the whole “make money online” thing… how do you scale?
There are two main ways to make more money, which generally applies any business.
  1. Get more customers
  2.  Make more money per customer
So how can you apply this?
One way to get more customers is to increase your focus on Step 4—building your following. You should always be growing your following and as a result growing your list. A way to make more money per customer is by continuing to give great value to your subscribers so that they want to buy from you over and over again.
